DuClaw operates their main brewery in Abingdon MD, and has four taphouse satellite locations at Arundel Mills (Hanover), Bel Air, Bowie (Town Center Mall), and BWI Airport (Baltimore). I am very fond of DuClaw's product line. Their tamest beers are Bare Ass Blonde, Sawtooth Belgium White, Misfit Red, and Bad Moon Porter, and I would consider these just average. But things improve rapidly with Euphoria Brown (yum!), Exile Belgian, Old Flame, Venom Pale Ale, and seasonal Naked Fish Chocolate Raspberry Stout. Things get very complex and delicious with BlackJack Russian Imperial Stout (7.5%), Misery Wheat Wine (10%), and Serum Double IPA (9%). As if those big beers aren't enough, their offering culminates with Devil's Milk Barleywine (10.5%) and the perfectly bold Pax Nemesis Imperial Alt (11%). The BWI airport location is open to the public (not just air travelers), outside security, near ticketing. If you're not flying through BWI, then a better choice of course is to visit the nearby Arundel Mills (Hanover) location. I highly recommend visiting for a sampler flight.

I arrived at BWI in search of a good beer to pass the time before my flight. There's a bar at the end of terminal A that serves nothing special. Outside of security near Southwest ticketing is DuClaw Brewing's airport location. They had 7 of their beers on tap plus three macros. I looked at the beer list and selected the double IPA. It was 9% and somewhat hoppy without being overly bitter. Fairly typical East Coast DIPA. The beer was served in a room temperature shaker pint. The macros were served in frosted pint glasses. That gave me a chuckle. Another thing that gave me a chuckle was when I ordered my first beer. The bartender asked I wanted a tall glass or just a pint. This is a fairly typical question in an airport bar setting. Normally, I'd opt for the larger serving, but a pint full of a 9% beer is already plenty. The service was efficient. The prices were certainly reasonable at $5 a pint, that's low for an airport. While the beer wasn't mindblowing, DuClaw is definitely worth a stop if you're at BWI, even if you have to travel from a different terminal. Just remember to give yourself a little extra time to get through security.
