Stopped in here last week mid week to pick up some beer for me and some cider for my wife. Have not had a chance to try the beer yet. The brewery itself was kind of strange. I guess it is different on weekends when there is tours going, but on weekdays there wasn't much to it. I get that they don't offer tours during the week, but I was surprised that beer tastings weren't available.

The original brewery was built in 1885, and after renovation in 2001 became home to the Philadelphia Brewing Co. It's not much to look at from the outside, but I was impressed at their spacious sampling room and generous offering of beer samples. I attended their popular free tour on a Saturday afternoon, and the tour was quite entertaining, led by a friendly and humorous guide. Of their beers, I found "Kenzinger", "Fleur De Lehigh", "Rowhouse Red", and "Walt Wit" to be just average or below. Their hoppier "Pennsylvania Pale Ale" and "Newbold IPA" were average and very drinkable. My favorites were the "Harvest From the Hood", "Joe Coffee Porter", and "Kilty Pleasure Scotch Ale" (10% abv).

On Saturday, Aug. 15th, we embarked on a LONG beer day in Philly. Starting here at Philadelphia Brewing Company. PBC is located in the old Yards facility and they kept everything "mostly" the same. They had 4 regular beers on tap and a seasonal. First up was Kenzinger. They called this a Kolsch but it was too hoppy (and that was a nice thing). This beer was very nice, clean and refreshing. Next up was Walt Wit, a Belgian Wit Bier. Then Rowhouse Red, a Rye Red Ale with lots of rye flavor and dark carmel notes. Then the Newbold IPA which had a ton of citrus aroma hops. Nice a crisp and clean. Finally, Shackamaximum Imperial Stout. Very sweet, chocolaty and hard to finish a 5oz. sample because of the body.
Overall, we really enjoyed our trip. The tour guide was knowledgeable and the beers were clean. Free samples of whatever you want and as many as you want! Dart boards, chairs, order food from down the street or pack your own... Parking on the street is pretty easy. Nice, cheap way to see a brewery in a historic building in Fishtown.
