This brewpub has just been renamed the Phoenix Brewing Company (March 1, 2020). Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey led the renovation of the formerly named Ellicott Mills Brewing Company, and the story behind this effort will be part of a two-hour special episode of his show "24 Hours to Hell and Back" about the recovery of Old Ellicott City that will air on May 12, 2020. The long time brewery has merged with a restaurant (Phoenix Emporium) that was hit by serious floods in 2016 and 2018.

There are plenty of shops and eateries along Ellicott City's Main Street. Massive 300 million year old monolithic rock lines the north side of the street, and this makes for a lovely sunny day stroll (or crisp evening crawl). For beer hunters, I recommend three stops which span just 1/3 mile. Ellicott City's best draft selection is at Judge's Bench, the best bottle selection is at Phoenix Emporium, and freshly brewed craft beer is offered at Ellicott Mills brewpub. I really enjoyed my visit to this charming town.

Ellicott Mills Brewpub is a beautiful old building with stone mason front and brick sides with green trim. Park along the street parking or in a small pay lot behind the building. Inside, poor acoustics, wooden ceilings and floors contribute to the historic feel. Large windows separate the main bar area from the copper brewing vessels. There is a 14-chair copper top bar and some table seating downstairs. There are family friendly dining tables upstairs, and downstairs there is a rathskellar style tavern for private cocktail parties. Ellicott Mills has eight house beers on tap - four standard beers plus four rotating seasonals, with heavy emphasis on a variety of bock style lagers. In a couple visits, I tried Maibock, Marzen, Dunkel, Aussie-style Boomerang, Kolsch, IPA, Pale Ale, Stout, Pilsner, Hefeweizen, and a couple Bocks. Their beers were well crafted and flavorful, but rather average and not extraordinary. The food menu is excellent and ever changing. Service was attentive and friendly. Charming place.

Ellicott Mills Brewing has consistently been a disappointment from a beer standpoint... and, oh, how I wish it were different. The food is consistently good and the atmosphere is fantastic: in historic Ellicott City inside a old warehouse, there are actually three levels to this place. The lower level is more 'bar-sy' with a lot of smaller tables. The street level is where the large bar is for the brewpub and it is a very inviting configuration as you walk in the door. The restaurant level upstairs is very well-decorated and gets a lot of light.

Unfortunately, nearly every beer I've had at Ellicott Mills has been poor. The lighter beers almost always have a sour taste to them and the hoppier beers never get the right balance. Selection is moderately wide.

As I write this review, I've come to learn that the brewpub may actually be closed.
