When I visited the Stable's website, the beer list only featured one beer brewed on premise (a Helles). However, because the rest of the beer list was pretty impressive (20+ craft selections on draft) I decided to give it a shot. Boy am I glad I did.

It turned out they had four beers on draft: a Helles, an Alt, a Rauchbier and a Zoigl. As a German beer lover I was thrilled, especially considering that these are underrepresented styles here in the States. They were all above average (the Alt and Rauchbier) to excellent (the Zoigl and Helles). If German beer isn't your thing, their 20 or so guest taps covered just about every other style, from Founder's Cerise to Left Hand Milk Stout to New Holland Hop Rocket.

The food was also excellent. The menu skews towards bar food (sandwiches and pizza) though they also have a few entrees--and, for the adventurous, the "plate of food." Chef's choice; you don't know what you're getting ahead of time; no refund. While the sandwiches aren't too exotic, they seem to focus on having fresh ingredients. I had a cajun sandwich that was shrimp and andouille sausage smothered with red sauce and mozzarella on a freshly-baked roll. Simple but very well done.

My only complaint was the service was a little slow (especially for a Tuesday night where it wasn't very busy) but our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. Their covered, outdoor seating was perfect on a mild (by St. Louis standards) August night, they had good tunes on the jukebox (or possibly iPod), and as a bonus they also micro-distill. I'll definitely be back again.
