Granite City is an interesting conundrum. They are a brewpub...sort of. The beers are all brewed off premisis and shipped in tanker trucks to the awaiting restaurant, where they are emptied into fermentors and fermentation is done there. This does save a great deal of money for the owners, not having to have brewing equipment at each site. As a beer-geek purist this is not as exciting to me, I like to know exactly where my beer is coming from. Also it is hard to find staff who are very knowledgeable about beer and beer styles. Make sure to ask for a non-chilled glass, this is a pet peave of mine!

The beers are ok, but not amazing. The bock is the best of the regular line-up. Don't fall for ordering the "Two-Pull" a blend of the bock and the light american lager. The seasonals have been getting more frequent in the last 2 years...with one every two months or so. The Irish Red and the Scottish ales are very nice session beers. They tend to run out of these quickly though. Avoid the blueberry beer if possible. They do have a release party open to mug-club members for each seasonal beer with free appetizers and giveaways. Mug club membership gets you a 20 oz mug instead of a pint glass, and points can lead to discounts on food.

This place really shines when it comes to the food, and that more than the beer brings me back here. Large portions, and consistently well prepared. The black pepper crusted blue cheese burger is one of the better burgers I've had.
