Downey's Restaurant occupies the lower two levels of a four story building in Philly's Society Hill neighborhood. To the west on South Street's is a great variety of places to eat, and this area is quite popular. Parking is metered along the street, and there is a small pay lot across the street. Downey's has an ornate green facade, with gold trimmed black squares, and a street corner entrance. The 2nd floor's black awning covered street side patio, with black metal tables, is reminiscent of New Orleans architecture. The first floor has a large dining area and their main bar, which was undergoing renovation last time I visited. Upstairs is more dining space and a straight 7 chair wooden bar. The creaking wood floors, ornate trim and ceiling, and classic decor create an historic ambience with the feel of a traditional Irish tavern. The service is friendly with south Philly charm, but the food prep seemed somewhat slow. The excellent food menu is eclectic and expansive, with steak, wood fired pizza, and a variety of great entrees. Their claim to fame is a delicious 2-lb pound lobster meal (a great deal at just $17)! They have 6 common beers on tap, including Guinness of course. Although the beer selection is disappointing for Philly, overall this is a decent place with good food.
