Baltimore's original Pub Dog Drafthouse opened in 2001 in historic Federal Hill neighborhood, and in 2007 Pub Dog opened a second location in Columbia MD. In 2006 DOG Brewing Company began brewing in Westminster MD, and this main brewery now produces for both Pub Dog locations. The drafthouses feature the "Dog Deal", buy-one-get-one-free 10 oz mugs of their house beers, and most of the craft beers are also available for sale in 22 oz bottles. Most of Pub Dog's brews are just average, but they have a great variety. Some of their decent beers are Amber, Blond, Black (Irish Stout), Brown (English Style), and White (Wheat). They also have a steady offering of fruit beers, Blueberry (my favorite), Peach, Raspberry, and Cherry. And for hop-heads like me, by far the best of their ales are "Hoppy Dog IPA" and "Imperial Dog Double IPA" (6.8%). The Federal Hill location is easy to get to from downtown, has an inviting small bar downstairs, and more room upstairs (including a shuffleboard table). Their menu includes a couple dozen varieties of decent thin pizza. I think this bar is a nice place to stop for a few craft beers while in Baltimore.

All the beer for the Dog Pub locations comes from the same brewery...the old Clay Pipe brewery in Westminster. The barkeeps are friendly enough, but I wasn't particularly taken with their beers. The pale ale was a little oxidized and the IPA was astringent. The wheat was a little hot with fusels and wasn't well balanced. The location in Columbia is luckily just across the parking lot from Frisco Grill and Cantina, which has great taps.

After a lawsuit this last year, this pub is now called "The Dog Pub". In addition, you used to be able to bring your dog into the pub, but the health department cracked down on that too. Nevertheless, this is a very good brew pub. They have about 10 of there own beers on tap: Peach Dog (a light peach beer), Blond Dog, Blueberry Dog, Thirsty Ale (an English style ale), Amber Dog, Irish Red, Hoppy Dog (close to an IPA), Brown Dog, Black Dog (a stout), and the Seasonal Dog (a porter). I've tried the porter, the IPa, the stout, and the English Ale: all were quite good. I really like the porter - a good full bodied beer with an interesting taste that I couldn't quite put my finger onto.

There are 3 levels to the Dog. There's a shuffle board table on the 3rd floor. The two bar tenders very friendly (Julio and Maggie). You get two 8.5 oz. beers for $3.50, so its relatively inexpensive for a great beer.

The Dog also has some very nice thin crust pizza (10''). I tried the Cajun Dog (a bit spicy) and was very impressed.

The crowd is relatively mixed.
