I enjoyed my visit to Carmody. It has a good layout with the bar, tables and some window side tables in front. At the midpoint of the space is a stage and more seating. The back ¼ offers a small lounge area and a large window in which you can just catch a glimpse of the big lake. There is an interesting seating area opposite the stage, the seats connected to the wall almost looks like a modified pew. There are high ceilings, dark wood and yellow paint with lots of photos and Irish stuff.


I enjoyed the really friendly staff. They were quick on service, could discuss beer and music and were generous in their praise of some of the other nearby beer establishments.

I tried three of the 6 house beers. Everything was solid with the session ale being the standout. They also have decent guest taps and bottles. They mentioned that their brewing is improving as they have almost two years now on their current set-up. House beers were $3.50 for a pint.

I found out the owner was from Chicago and that explains the Old Style-Cubs neon and the Old Style bottles on the menu.

Since it is near Benedicts’, and Fitger’s, you have an easy mini pub-crawl in the making.

I'm not normally fan of writing bad reviews, but feel the need to protect future visitors from this place. I'm not sure how long the pub has been brewing their own beers, but I'm guessing not long.

The decor of the place is 1950's well-aged drinking-man's pub with a few irish flags and posters placed about to make it "Irish." The area behind the bar is plastered with defaced dollar bills, many of them with obscenties and dirty pictures on them. Not family, (or spouse,) friendly. The bartender was very nice and attentive.

My wife and I shared the beer sampler to try all 5 of their offerings. My wife, who is not a huge beer fan, made a horrified face after tasting the dry stout. Yup, this thing was sour and funky. There was an IPA that was very unbalanced and tasted of grain alcohol. A Belgian tripel that was slightly sour and also incredibly "hot." The red was the only beer that was drinkable, and even that was mainly to clear the taste of the other beers from the palate. We quickly settled up our tab and snuck out with 4 of the beers left nearly untouched.

This was probably the worst beer I have ever had from a commercial brewery/brewpub. I make better beer than this in my garage. The people at the bar drinking Corona's were probably thinking, "Suckers!"
