One of the darker and more dismal of Düsseldorf's brewpubs, Füchschen has little you won't get at the others. The pub ranges through several large rooms, all with the standard pine-topped tables.

The alternative to the brewery's so-so alt is a so-so weizen, clean and crisp in the north German style.

Service is brisk and the atmosphere is certainly buzzy, but on a rainy December's evening it just felt brisk and unfriendly to this drinker.

It's hard to pick between the four pub-breweries in the city, but this one is bottom of my ratings.

Brauerei Im Füchschen is at the northern edge of the altstadt (old city), and about 4 blocks from Tonhalle subway stop. The place is part restaurant, part brewpub and part beer hall-plus fun and not_to_be_missed.

Tables were hard to come by, so we found a big one with just a few people at one end and asked about the other side, "Ist es frei?" No problem.

The beer options are limited, to say the least-but what they had, altbier, was terrific. The small glasses of their house altbier were 1.80 euros and go terrifyingly quick.

The food was good and the prices were about on par with the area. They had specials written on chalk boards around the place.

The waiters seemed to be having a blast and it all added to the charm.

As you're leaving, make sure to get a few of the reasonably priced bottles of their fresh altbier to go. Just stop at the desk close to the door.
