While visiting in Springfield, MO recently I drove down to Aurora and had lunch and some sample beers at Bootleggers. This is a restaurant first and a brewery second. I started with the sampler of beers. The glasses were probably 2 or 3 ounces but the flight included 9 beers for $5.50. They were just tapping a new keg so they gave me one of those also. The place used to be a bank and the décor showed it. The brewing equipment is in the old vault in the middle of the room. There is a “teller’s station” at the entrance and several framed newspapers of gangsters and bank robbers on the wall. This place has a very nice setting and is in a good location. All the beers were very light in color and alcohol content for their style. They had four wheat beers (amber, light, dark, and raspberry), two pilsners (American and blueberry), stout, bock, red ale, and pale ale. One their menu the pale ale is listed as 1/2 pilsner and 1/2 dark wheat; the red ale is listed as 1/2 bock and 1/2 pilsner; and the amber wheat is listed as 1/2 dark wheat and 1/2 light wheat. The light and dark wheat beers are their best sellers. Pints are $4.25 and 1/2 gallon growlers are $10. Overall the beer was ok; I don’t think the “mixed” beers were true to their style. They have a pretty good menu and the food I had was good, not great. The place is all no-smoking and there is plenty of parking on the streets.
