This brewery is in an old Brick building with lots of wood accents inside that make it cool. They have a good Pilsner and all the beers were good. They had a Half Nelson IPA with New Zealand hops that was fruity but hoopy and had some berry type fruit in it. They had pretzels with cheese fondu that was great. They had a good Belgian Golden, slight peppery with Sterling hops. The Drop Top Amber was very nice if somewhat lite for style. The Broken Halo IPA was good. They also had German style Potato salad that was good, it had a honey chipotle dressing but was not too spicey for me. They also had a good Dopplebock that was somewhat light in color but not flavor. On a nine trip brewery tour of Oregon this was the best Brewery! Don't miss it, in fact, go out of your way to visit. Also don't miss the gift shop, it is small but has the best prices anywhere. I bought some 20 oz. Blonde Ale glasses for $1 each, $2 Widmer pint glasses and a cool hat for $3.

Had to visit one of the big boys in Portland when I visited. This place was described as a gasthaus, so I was expecting an extensive german menu to go along with the hefeweizen. I was a little disappointed with the menu, a few german items, but overall pretty average menu. Although I will say the prices at this place are extremely reasonable.

Overall none of the beers I sampled were all that memorable, the well known beers were as expected. A few cask selections that were a good change of pace.

The bar is way outside of downtown Portland and not easy to find. We called a number of times and were given the wrong directions a few times. When you do find it though, there is no mistaking it, the huge copper kettles across the street from the restaurant are impressive. Heard a lot about the tour but unfortunately got there too late to go on one.

After years of passing by the brewery and smelling the malts and hops from the top of I-405 I stopped and took the tour. The place was massive and they tour was great. Talked with the brewer for hours and we just BS’d away. Got to try some special beers they where working on and they really went above beyond trying to show us a great time on the tour. I saw Kurt Widmer waking around but I was not going to be a tool to yell hey Kurt. This is a great tour and when you can stop next door at the Gasthaus for more brews and good food.
