I guess to each his own but, on this one: not for me. Funky place in an unlikely area. It's obviously been here for years and has no issues with letting you know that. Sticky tables, ratty old menus, and pictures on the walls from the '70's.
This is the fourth brewpub I've been to in a small city on the Ohio River and, just with the exception of New Albanian (which I love), they've all had bad beer.
They have five standards and some seasonals. They still had the Spring seasonal (the wit) when we came in late June, which was described as "like a Blue Moon" by the waitress, although everyone throws that name around now, it seems. That was probably their best offering. It was a bit like a Blue Moon but had a more citrus taste.
The standards were all pretty bad. I think the passable one that I thought about getting a pint of was the black lager, which tasted a little like an Amber Bock. That's not a good thing, of course.
But the beer was obviously designed for the Budweiser sect. I overheard a guy try to order a Michelob and, when told they only had it on bottle and had nothing but house brew on tap, he said "Okay, I'll just take it on bottle." I mean, it's tough in places like this to brew beer and actually sell it. I don't blame them for toning it down but, if you're going to do that, don't put an abomination of an IPA on there and still call it an IPA.
I read somewhere that they had what some considered the best pizzas in Indiana. I feel that, now, this is Chicagoans trying to make fun of Indiana because, if this is the best pizza in Indiana, then that's a sad take on the pizza here.
And it really isn't the best. The place down the street from me has better pizza. They make a lot of the stuff in house supposedly, including sausage and meatballs, but I really didn't like the sauce. It was too bland for me. The crust was the cracker/thin style which a lot of people don't like, so be warned.
But everything was pretty cheap. If you go Sunday to Wednesday, beers are $2.75 for a 16oz. The sampler of six was $3.30. The medium (barely enough for two) was $11.70 while the large was about $15. Really not bad.
Smoking is in the bar, which is separated from the "Family Entrance" (got a kick out of that). They open at 4pm on Sunday, and keep in mind that Evansville is in Central Time.
I didn't go in there with high expectations and, if you come, please follow suit. They're a cute place and are at least trying in a city where Texas Roadhouse and Old Chicago have lines out the door at off-hours but places like this have to struggle to get by. You could certainly do worse.
