we visited bab's on a sunday night. the place is new a mall or something and we had to park a looooong way from the bar. once at the bar, the wait for a table was 45 min. we went to the bar and found a place immediately. bar staff were very friendly but had little knowledge of the beer. we ordered the samlper and found a good varity of beers. ipa and black lager stood out. part of the sampler was a sample of the guest beer..? albeita. i don't go to brew houses to taste commerical beers. anyway, it was the worse of the sample. maybe they throw in a dud to make theirs seem better.? the food was great. bbq is their deal and they do it right. ribs were great. the platter with their 2 types of ribs is recommended. let them do their speal about the rib types. overall, a great visit.

Rancho Mirage is one of these manufactured shopping vacation spots for monied middle to upper crusts to go and not have to rub elbows with the riffraff. Well, the riffraff showed up tonight and sat down at the bark in hopes of ordering a beer. We were roundly ignored despite the fact we were sitting right in front of the taps. The bartender had to strain not to make eye contact with us.

We finally gave up and retreated to a seat in the bar in hopes that one of the wait staff with compromise their dignity and bring us a beer. We only had to endure another five minutes of invisibility before we received some attention.

The beer we ordered was worth the wait. The menu said this was a Belgian tripel. It was most obviously not a tripel, though it was Belgian. I'd say their "Drunk'n Monk" was more like Strong Dark. It was tasty, but stylistically flawed. If this was entered as a tripel in a BJCP certified competition it would receive the minimum number of points. It was the wrong color and it was too heavy in the body, finishing sweet and it was dark like a dubbel. To top it off the tasting notes in the menu were all wrong. They didn't describe the beer at all. My theory is that the wait staff had old menus and the brewer forgot to mention that he'd put a dubbel on to replace the tripel that had just run out the night before.

They had some other beers: a pale ale, a golden ale, and a black lager. None of these beer seemed like they would be able to follow the dubbel (aka tripel).

The food was good. We had the pork tamales and salmon salad. It was tasty, but not amazing. Plenty of parking.

This is one of those brewpubs that has an impressive infrastructure and a gleaming brewing system in a glass enclosed room. These kinds of brew pubs that invest more in the restaurant than the beer are beginning to bore me. Another thing that turned me off about this brewpub is that they had Newcastle and Bud Light on tap along with their own beers. It might be a good business move, but I think that signals that they aren't serious about their beer. They also have many mainstream beers available in the bottle.
