Barley's is one of the best beer bars in the southeast. They have a great selection of American and Belgian craft brews and their beer dinners are not to be missed. Some of the best pizza in town.

The service can be surly, but that is part of the charm. They staff is very knowledgeable about beer, and Josh, the owner, makes it a point to keep his staff up to date. They do a great job of bringing in new beers so the selection is constantly changing.

As to the comment about limited SC beers, that has more to do with quality than anything else. The local guys are good, but not as good as some of the guys coming out of NC and GA. The SC distributors are also shady, making getting some of the beer regularly difficult.

Smoking is no longer allowed in Barley's or any other establishment in Greenville now, making it a great place to go enjoy a beer.

Of all the places that people miss when the leave Greenville, Barley's tops the list.

If you've been to Barley's in Asheville, Greenville is very similar. A bank of drafts downstairs and then some different drafts upstairs. The menu touts 70 drafts, but several upstairs were blown kegs. The draft list was pretty strong when you add up and downstairs. It was a little sad that very few of the beers were SC (actually I only saw a Root Beer that was local).

The food was good. The garlic knots are not as good as Asheville, but the Philly was outstanding. I sat in the dining room and had ultra lousy service. No one ever came by to ask if I needed anything...once I sat at the bar Jeff took care of my every need. I'd probably still be dry if I had stayed in the dining room. Why can't servers figure out that the guy sitting by himself is probably the one with money and who will tip well for good service?

No smoking downstairs, but smoking did seem to be allowed upstairs, but it was not bad.

I'll start out by saying that if you can only make one stop in Greenville, this is the one to make. The beer selection has really improved since the last time I've been here. There's a strong emphasis on local/regional beer from NC, SC, and GA. On my most recent visit they had several taps from Foothills, Highland, Thomas Creek, RJ Rockers, Catawba Valley, and Terrapin just to name a few. They are also part of the John Locker's Stock program at Rogue, so there are always a few nice Rogue things on as well. They even have things like Allagash White, Saison Dupont, etc.

One of my favorite things that they do here is the sampler tray. They'll sell you any 6 beers in a 6oz pour for $10. The regular pint prices are also very reasonable - I don't think I saw a single thing on the list for more than $4. Bottles are a little more expensive, but not bad.

The atmosphere leaves a little to be desired as it's big, open, and thus a little noisy. Service is good in all but the busiest of times. I don't know that I've ever had an empty pint here (when I didn't want one).

The food is usually pretty good, especially if you stick with the pizza/calzones. The only things I've had here that I wasn't crazy about strayed from their core specialty.

Overall, Barley's just continues to get better and better. Once SC lifts the cap, this place will continue to set the standard for Greenville (and probably the whole state).
