I went to college in Ames and frequented Olde Main on occasion. I have drank there year round brews at many of the fine establishments in the area. The Dinkey wheat is a full flavored wheat beer with some nice orange tones and aromas. I am also a fan of the Cyclone Pale ale which in my opinion is a very good example of pale ale. Not overly hoped but the right amount of bitterness and aroma to drink all night. There seasonal beer selection is good though I have no notes on any of them right now.

Food has always been good, but I usually went there for the beer and appetizers so again I don’t have any notes to a specific entrée

Depending on the weekend and what is happening at ISU the place can be packed and service suffers but that is to be expected. Never had a bad experience or a poor server.

I don't think this brewery was competitve with the craft market in the region when the company was new, but this company has stayed with their product, and I can now say that it is one of the better brewpubs I have ever been to. The diversity of the beers and the quality products that it has developed is really impressive, not only for the region, but as a brewpub in general.

Many brewpubs consolidate their styles to minimize the amount of various hops and malts that it must order, or it trends its brands towards the one-time-customer's taste, but this brewpub has been able to satisfy both sides with a great rotating selection of seasonal beers as well as aggressively marketing it's flagship brands.

All-in-all, I think this brewpub has changed the beer culture of this college town and the region by forcing the regular domestic beer bars into opening some tap space for their brews.

Great bar, great food, and great prices!! What more could you want from a local brewpub trying to make it's mark?
