Right in the center of Arcata, Humboldt Brews is a college hangout and a place to just hang out in general. The beer selection is quite good - 20 beers on tap, both from the local area and farther afield, and most of them from craft breweries (only 3 β€œmajors”).

The bar is four steps up from the sidewalk and is fairly narrow but long. It runs from a couple tables by the front windows all the way back to a large screen game at the back. Various wooden tables and chairs fill the space. There’s also a modern, simple bar with stools. The floors are wood, the walls are painted dark brown, the ceiling is black, and there are nice glass light fixtures over the bar.

The food looks typical of college-area pub food (fried items, burgers, etc.) but the chevre plate appetizer we tried was quite tasty.

Humboldt Brews is the beer bar version of Humboldt Brewing Company; the originators of Red Nectar Ale, Hemp Ale and several other classic recipes. Although they no longer brew on-site, they still serve several of their own recipes, now brewed by Firestone Walker. Nineteen of the twenty taps were operating when I visited and included a nice array of regional crafts with a few imports thrown in. I enjoyed the Humboldt IPA. There is a fair size bar plus lots of table seating, pool tables and a stage area. I didn’t have any food but the menu appeared to be typical pub fare. We found parking on the street but I assume there are public lots in the area.
