An absolutely amazing place! The island itself is beautiful enough. This establishment just makes the trip that much more necessary. Their beer is nothing short of perfection in a glass, and just a quick view of the brewing equipment alone tells you that their batches are small.

Between Sarah, our friend Laura, and myself, we tried four of their beers: a hoppy Belgian style (can't remember the name), the IPA, brown ale, and stout. While I do appreciate dark beers, I defer to my wife to order those kinds. (Her thinking is that if you can see through the beer in any way, it's not worth drinking.) Her brown and stout were amazing, and I would definitely recommed 'em for those who prefer those styles.

I, however, love the hops, and finding hoppy beers that are well-balanced, with rich floral overtones, yet really pack a punch can be difficult. Well, consider the Belgain-pale (since I can't remember that name of that beer) and their IPA to be the Holy Grail. These two concoctions practically brought tears to my eyes. Yes, they were that wonderful.

Another positive about Offshore is the atmosphere. Not sure about you, but I'm getting really tired of the trendy brewpub...you know what I'm talking about: a place that serves burgers and their homemade beer but for which if one wasn't paying attentions, he/she would think he just stumbled into a Stewart Anderson's or some other characterless food venue. (Thanks Rock Bottom, RAM, and BJ's for taking all the uniqueness out of the brewpub experience.) This place, on the other hand, reeks of character. I won't go any further. Just experience it for yourself.

I've been to Offshore a few times in the past--usually just for a pint or two. Since I spent a total of twelve straight hours there this past Saturday for the invasion, I feel I now have a better grasp of the place. Situated on Kennebec Street in Oak Bluffs, within earshot of the ocean, the building is of typical funky Oak Bluffs style construction.

First and foremost, Offshore isn't a huge place, but it's just big enough--I would describe it as quaint and cozy almost. The bar appears right as you enter with the open style kitchen to the left. Watch out for the barrel of peanuts located right near the door. Yes you can throw those shells on the ground--it's not rude and is actually encouraged. The wooden bar is pretty long with approximately 12-15 chairs. There are 5 or 6 booths against the wall on the opposite side. There a bunch of round wooden tables between the booths and the kitchen area. Behind the bar and up top on the rafters is the brewhouse.

I ended up having lunch, a snack, and then dinner, so I was pretty well acquainted with the food. The menu is pretty large with your typical pub grub (steak and cheese, burger, chili, etc), but they also sport seafood (of course), steak, pasta, etc. The burger was very tasty with a hint of spicyness and cooked to exactly my specifications. The snack I had ended up being chili, which was equally as good. The pizza--WOW. The pizza is so tasty. Nice thin crust with perfectly smooth tomato sauce. I could have finished the whole thing, but was sharing. Some of the food was a bit pricey, but then some of it was a bit cheap in my opinion--best of both worlds. The service was pretty good--bartenders were prompt and the waitresses were amiable.

Matt, the brewer, is a mad scientist so of course his beers are going to be amazing. He had a very nice selection on tap, as I'm sure he always does. The fogcutter porter was very silky smooth and a good wake up beer that sports coffee notes. The hop goddess, a belgian IPA, is equally as good. I counted 12 taps, besides the four upstairs. Porter, IPA, double IPA, stout, double stout(s), amber, brown, doppelbock, scotch ale, and a few more I can't remember off hand. Also had a porter on cask. The brews very extremely fresh and tasty, which made me smile every time I had a sip or a sniff. Price for a pint--$4. Can't get better than that!

Atmosphere is a very important aspect of any place and Offshore's got it going on. From the start, the peanuts shells on the floor, the antique canoes hanging from the high ceilings, and old pictures on the wall give it a rustic feel as well as one that's homey and comfortable. There's a dart board on the wall that left me with the impression that it's a local hang out also. If your eating your dinner at one of the tables or at a booth, you can see the pizza maker spinning his dough and putting into the brick oven.

If you're on the island, this IS the place to stop for a pint and some grub. And, if you're off island, take the 45 minute ferry because you won't regret it. Take a growler home too!
