The name (512) refers of course to the Austin telephone area code. The brewery is located in a medium-sized gray corrugated steel building in an industrial park. A few hop vines adorn the side of the building. One rollup garage door opens to the brewhouse, which holds several tall stainless steel fermenters. Another rollup garage door opens to their raw material and keg storage area. There is no tasting room and tours are only given infrequently from what I can tell on the website. With no tour or tasting room it's hard to score for service for this location. However, I gather that (512) beers are highly thought of in Texas. I tried their India Pale Ale and Pecan Porter which were both better than average. I also tried their special brews "One" Belgian-Style Strong Ale Aged in Brandy Barrels and "Two" Double India Pale Ale, which were both tremendous craft beers, very flavorful. (512) is a growing craft brewery, one to watch for continued success.

LOVE the (512) Pecan Porter-thoughts of its sweet malty goodness with that subtle hint of pecan makes my mouth water. Plan to "Whip in" for a pint of the Cream Stout asap. Their Wit is the only beer I've ever seen my husband really enjoy.

I will say their events tend to be overcrowded, parking is atrocious and people should be more civilized, get in line and wait their turn. For that reason we don't go to their brew events any longer, but I still drink their beer...as often as possible!

While (512) hosts great events and has improved the craft beer scene in Austin, their beer is mediocre and inconsistent.

These opinions are purely from a brewer's perspective - a profession I have been lucky enough to enjoy for over 10 years.

(512) makes very flavorful beer, which most people seem to enjoy. But there is little balance or craftsmanship present. I have yet to drink one of their beers that does not have an easily preventable defect - diacetyl, acetaldehyde, chlorophenol, you name it. And the defects vary with each batch.

Some would argue that beer should not be the same from batch to batch - that variety and imperfections give beer its personality. There is something to that argument but, as a brewer, I view it as simply unskilled and sloppy work.

Hopefully with all the new breweries popping up around town, Austin's palate will become more discerning and demanding.

(512) Brewing Company is a microbrewery located in the heart of Austin, brewing for the community using as many local, domestic and organic ingredients as possible. The original practice of small breweries supplying their immediate community has been nearly lost, and with it, the quality that is possible from small handcrafted batches. The beers are built on old world English and Belgian recipes, but enhanced to celebrate bold domestic ingredients. Made with Austin’s mineral rich water, the (512) beers taste like none other.
I've tried several of these brews locally (he doesn't export much out of town) and they are wonderful. If you can drop by the brewery or get your hands on some, then do it!
