The centre of Dublin is not a good place to try picking up a couple of bottles of good takeaway beer: the Bull & Castle runs an off licence service, otherwise head over to Redmond's in Ranelagh or DrinkStore in Stoneybatter (qv).

SuperValu on Aston Quay is a major anomaly, however. Tucked in to the back left corner of the shop there's a small beer section with lots of Irish BUL macros and east European imports, but there's also a half-decent range of English beers from the likes of Black Sheep. There are a few good Belgians, and La Trappe from the Netherlands.

Best of all, there's a regular supply of three beers from Unibroue in Canada and this, in my experience, is the only place you'll find these beers in Ireland.

If you don't have the time to head to a proper beer shop while in Dublin, this is worth a peek. But there's also gold to be found for the full-on connoisseur as well.
