linkI spotted Glueks from my hotel window. The Bavarian banners for Oktoberfest caught my eye.
Gluek's is old world with lots of wood, some beautiful stained glass, an ancient bar with tons of brewery memorabilia on display. It is lived in but not dirty or dingy.
As you enter there is a hostess station is front of you. There is some elevated seating to your right and then the bar occupies the northern wall. The middle and south side of the building are all tables and chairs. This place is made for big groups. There is a cool barrel vaulted style ceiling with some exposed beams. There is a back room for music and private parties. There is also a small outdoor area near the front door.
They had a surprisingly large and boisterous crowd on a Sunday evening.
Service is competent and knows there beer lists. It could be a bit friendlier. I was served a Surly Bender in a can with no glass. No big deal as they were quick to supply one when I asked.
20+ taps with most being crafts. There are lots of seasonal choices and 4 of their own house beers (not sure who makes them). They had 4 Oktoberfest beers on when I was there (Schell’s, Surly, Summit & Hoffabrau. 50+ bottles with about 12 decent choices.
They have a large menu and the appetizers I had were pretty decent.

linkUh, what's that smell? Diaper? Port-o-john? Hospital dumpster?
It doesn't matter how good the beer is, how clean the tap lines are, the price or the service, everything you order at Gluek's will taste like the bar smells: some variation on urine + industrial cleanser.
Gluek's is a cool space: nice high ceilings & thick wooden furniture. They're right in the heart of the nightlife for downtown Minneapolis. Maybe a few bucks invested in Roto-Rooter and vent fans could save it.
