If you only have time to visit one bar in Portland to sample the local crafts brews, this is it! They always have a GREAT selection on tap. The bar is always packed after work. Thursday nights are a great night to visit. They have "brewer showcases" on a specific brewing company and at times the head brewer is present. The food has been great at times and terrible at others. I would stick to the American food such as burgers or the steak salad. The last time my wife and I went we ordered seafood and it was not good. Service tends to be good at the bar and less attentive in the dining room. I have often got up myself to go the bar from the dining room to get another beer. Bottom line, DEFINITELY go for the best craft beer selection in town and order American food at the bar. Skip the dining room.

I was up in Portland, Maine, and looking for a cool pub to drink at after the Seadogs game, and found it at the Great Lost Bear. This is a great local place with lots of character. I don't like going to commercialized chains, I'm always on the lookout for something more unique.
This was an interesting bar. There were many different rooms, and the one I was sitting in felt like I was in my uncle's den. There was a big stuffed wild boar staring at me as I ate my Philly Cheesesteak.
They claim to have something like 100 beers on tap, but I ordered a Pabst nevertheless. It arrived ice cold in a tall boy can, so I was happy.

Great lost Bear has over 50 beers on tap. This is one of my favorite places to have a beer and some good food. They have an extensive menu that should satisfy any taste buds. They also have 5 ounce sampler glasses that are really cool and allows one to taste several brews. My favorite thing on the menu is the chili burger! Really good. It has a really friendly atmosphere that makes your first visit feel like you have been going there your whole life.
