I have been to Dublin several times and this is usually one of our our last stops on our pub crawl. The Porterhouse is usually very lively with average Irish ale and stout beers on tap. I would recommend the stout. It is one of the newest breweries in town that has been mostly successfull in brewing original Irish beers. Guinness is King but the beers here are not bad. It is a great "last stop" before retiring to your room.

This was Dublin's original microbrewery, established in 1996 and since grown into a chain of bars too big to be supplied from the pub. The brewery has now moved off-site and the brewery space is now drinking space.

The draught beers are almost exclusively their own makes, mostly clones of the big commercial lagers, stouts and ales, plus the occasional seasonal brew. Quality varies, with the stouts being the best, despite the unfortunate nitro heads. The Porterhouse also produces Ireland's only permanent cask beer: TSB.

There is a very good selection of imported bottled beers, and decent food as well. Sadly the staff are generally clueless -- to the point of rudeness -- about the beer selection, and you can generally forget about being served in correct stemware. Orval at near-freezing temperature in a highball glass? Right away, sir.

The Porterhouse Temple Bar suffers particularly from being in Temple Bar, and is often crammed with tourists. The management seem to believe that what these unfortunates need is live traditional Irish music at ear-splitting volumes, so that's what you get at weekends.

For a more civilised Porterhouse experience, try Porterhouse North.
