linkAn inauspicious entry up a coachway leads to the front door of a pub which, by rights, should be much more renowned for its David role against the two Goliaths of Irish industrial brewing, one of which (Heineken, owners of Murphy's and Beamish) is based in Cork.
The Well has been quietly supplying the pubs of Cork with its core beers -- Rebel Red, Rebel Lager, Blarney Blonde -- for quite a few years now. The revolution is not being televised.
However, the best of their line is reserved for the home turf, and special praise is due to Shandon Stout, only available here. Those who eschew kegged beers will be delighted to learn that the pub serves directly from the tanks behind the bar. For these two reasons alone, the Franciscan Well is unmissable on a visit to Cork. If you get the weather, the beer garden's lovely too (though the covered smoking area is still very habitable in the rain). And if one of the rare seasonals is on as well, somebody up there definitely likes you.
