This bar has an impressive selection of Belgian style beers served in the appropriate glasses to accentuate the flavor. The menu has some decent items, we went with the cheese plate, which was alright, nothing special.

The one problem I had was that the prices seemed a bit extravagant for what you get. I think you are paying more for the atmosphere than the actual product. That being said, if you want to hang with your friends for a relaxed beer, this might be the place.

I met a friend at the Cheeky Monk on a near zero degree weeknight. The cold weather was definitely keeping the crowds away, as we were two of perhaps 10 people there. I certainly didn't mind the quiet of the small crowd.

The Monk is in an old brick store front along Colfax, just east of the CO state capitol building. There are big windows facing the street that provide for people watching. Dark wood and brick are the predominant themes inside. Belgian beer placards dot the walls, but other decorations are pretty sparse.

The main reason to go here is the beer, of course. I counted 16 on tap. There are perhaps 20 more in bottles at any given time. Carlsberg was the only concession being made to the non-daring set. With one exception, every beer we ordered was served in its brewery's glassware. Ordering Kwak is almost a must just for the wood handled cradle the glass comes in.

Service is great and our waitress was quite knowledgeable about the beers. Our food arrived so fast that I think the kitchen knew what we would be ordering before we did. The food itself was quite good, but the portions weren't particularly large. The menu itself is rather limited; although it does have several true Belgian dishes.

I expected the beer prices here to be high, as many Belgian beers are quite pricey in the store. I didn't expect the food prices to be on par with them. My friend and I ended up spending much more than we bargained for.

Overall, I'm glad I went. However, the high prices will make this a once or twice a year place for me.

The Cheeky Monk has a great beer menu. Unfortunately the rest of the operation was not as positive.

The neighborhood has a bit of an edge to it - homeless people on the sidewalk, that sort of thing. Not scary, but enough to keep a suburbanite on his toes. More important to the atmosphere, on the one visit I made, was the atmosphere inside. The guys at the bar were loud, rude, crude, generally obnoxious. They were drinking a lot and the bartender put up with it. I don't know whether the same people are there other days of the year and maybe we just got unlucky, but on the evening I visited I did not enjoy the atmophere.

The food was not particularly well made. Cheese croquettes were cold, mussels were overcooked. All quite tasty, but not well prepared.

Service was unremarkable.

If you need a Belgian beer fix, this is a great place to get one. If you need a Belgian food fix, this might be acceptable. Perhaps the atmosphere is better than I experienced - I may have gotten unlucky.

The Cheeky Monk has a great beer menu with great beers on it. The selection of Belgian beers is numerous and each one has an excellent description of what kind of flavors you can expect along with alcohol content. The food menu isn't bad either. There are a lot of excellent choices on it and everything has a beer pairing suggestion from the appetizers to desserts. Thsis place has a great atmosphere. It's a great place to have a nice dinner for two or to get together with a group of friends. Live music on Tuesday nights as well.
