In the thrall of the bars, taverns, and the Piece Brewpub, which occupy the area of North Ave., Damen Ave., and Milwaukee Ave. (at the Blue Line “L”'s Damen station), Cans Bar & Canteen is an outlet which aims at a wide spectrum. It is a venue which (obviously) stocks most of its beers in cans.
The situation of finding good beers in cans is improving. One time I was here, its "Can of the Month" was *its own* 'THP Light Beer' (brewed and canned in Charlotte, NC.).
The "Can of the Month" is always its value leader at $2. Other times, it has been Miller High Life, Hamms, and even the barely-seen Pabst Genuine Draft. I did not know Pabst was still making this. (When we ran beer tastings at the United Soccer Boosters' Convention [R.I.P], I had a good contact at Pabst, and this was one of the beers they always submitted. It won medals in its class at the Great American Beer Festival in the mid-1990s.) You'll find a wide variety of brands in cans which you will not find at many other bars.
It has draft beers. I think it has between 8-12 taps, and they're mostly macros, but I think I espied a Leinenkugels, and Goose Island's 312 Urban Wheat Ale on also.
There is food on the menu, but it is an afterthought. The chili was ok, but its serving was small. If you want to cheap it out and eat somewhere before entering here, try Flash Taco | Underdogg two blocks south on Damen.
I sat at the bar. Service was fine. There are lots of flat-screen televisions, mostly showing sports. (I think it had Fuel TV on one of them.)
