Amos Howard's is a restaurant and craft beer bar featuring the Olde Hickory Brewery beers, which are brewed in downtown Hickory. Amos Howard's is a stand alone one story concrete building, with adequate parking around the perimeter. Inside is their main dining room with plenty of distinctive barrel shaped booths. In back is their oddly M-shaped 12-chair bar. The background country music is lively and the place has a honky tonk atmosphere. The floor is black and white tiles and the place is seasonally decorated, and there are several televisions for sports. Behind the bar are refrigerator cases with dozens of craft beers in bottles. They have 18 beers on tap, most of which are the Olde Hickory brews, which are available by glass or sampler flight. The also feature a few guest taps. Their standard food menu consists of appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and meat entrees. It makes for a fine meal. The service is efficient and knowledgeable. It's a good, casual place for dinner and drinks.

I don't know if any brewing still goes on here. I'll have to call back and ask. This is a part of the Olde Hickory Brewery.

This place is easy to miss on 70 West on the outskirts of Hickory. The first thing you notice upon entering are the booths made from old wine/beer? barrels. Guess where my daughter likes to sit when we visit Amos Howard's.

The bar is in the back and is set up with peninsulas jutting out from the main bar so you can face the person you are drinking with. They have really solid beers. The Table Rock Pale being my favorite. They usually have a wide variety of their beers on-tap. Bottle selection is good as well. Growlers and 5 liter mini-kegs are available to go. Bartenders have been friendly to a fault on every visit (~10).

Food is pub grub, cheap and excellent. Black Bean Burger, Portabella Haystack and wings are standouts for me. I almost always stop when I-40 takes me west through Hickory. I've made the occasional trip just to have lunch.

I've been meaning to check out the newer OHB taproom downtown, but I just love the atmosphere here.

Also worth noting, they serve 20 oz imp. pints in heavy glasses that are only $2.50 to go. (the glass, not the beer)

One of my fave brewpubs in NC. And one that never seems to get a lot of chatter on the beer sites. They used to tap a cask every Friday night, and would allow a bar patron to tap the bung. You may want to call ahead if you're interested in cask ale.
