I have been traveling to Birmingham for business on a regular basis for the last 2+ years. I have made many stops in to this liquor store to pick up a bottle or two to enjoy whilst sitting around in my hotel during the evening. Their selection is pretty decent, they always have local Alabama and other regional beers that don't make it to Florida (where I'm from). Up until yesterday I would have left glowing reviews for this place, however I now will now be giving all my business to a different liquor store in town.

Here is the story... I enter Vulcan Beverage and ask the dude working about a few different beers that I'm looking to try. Dude working realizes that I am knowledgeable about beer so he informs me that they 'had' some Founders KBS but it's not available on the shelf anymore. After asking him a few more questions he tells me that they received a case and after 'the boss man' realized the demand for this particular beer he pulled it off the shelf. They were originally selling it for $6 a bottle, however they are now selling it for $20 a bottle. I was not happy to hear about this practice and emailed Founders to let them know that this business was jacking up the price of their beer. A representative from Founders called me back and informed me that they do not approve of such practices and will likely withhold future allocations of KBS from this business if this practice continues.

Bottom line is this place is shady. They are willing to screw over the good people of Birmingham and make a few extra bucks on a very hard to get beer, when they would be much better off selling this beer at a reasonable price and using that momentum to grow their business with sales of other products. I will not be returning to this business, and I recommend checking out Highland Package if you're looking for good beer in Birmingham, their selection is similar if not better and they don't price goudge.

Swung by Vulcan on the way out of Birmingham. For Alabama, they have a great selection. I looked around and couldn’t find anything that’s available in state not on sale.

They had: Rogue, Sam Adams, Some German, Some English, Beamish, Abita, Olde Town, Sweetwater to name a few (all I can remember)

A big plus is you can break any sixer into singles. No big deal.

It is a bit expensive. I left with six singles of nothing really spectacular and the total was $13.88. (Maybe that’s what it takes to deliver this variety in B’ham???)

All in all, it’s a great place for Birmingham and I’ll go back. (The beer selection score reflects availability in AL.)
