linkThe Great Dane has a nice portfolio of locations throughout the Madison area. This Hilldale location is one of the newest (opened in December of 2006) and lives up to the high quality standards for fine beer and food when weighed up against the other Madison area Great Dane brewpub locations. In addition to a wide selection of hand made beers created by the Great Dane, you will be hard pressed to find a large selection of macro brews available at the Great Dane. At last check, the beer menu only featured one factory beer (Miller Lite) and a macro produced cider. All other beers are either made by the Great Dane or by other local beer producers with craft in mind.
The menu at the Great Dane highlights a number of vegitarian items in addition to a few locavore favorites including a burger made from hormone free, locally raised beef. Make sure to try the beer cheese soup. If you are ever on the west side of Madison, WI, be sure to stop in the Great Dane Hilldale for some awesome food, great local beer and check out their huge game room.

This is a relatively new location as part of the Hilldale redevelopment efforts. Unlike the other Great Dane locations, state law prohibits this location from selling their own beer here. Outdoor pool table and couch offer a slightly upscale outdoor experience. However, the outdoor seating area is a colored concrete slab design so I would consider it to be average. Indoor atmoshphere is similar to their other locations. Because it is located in the city of Madison, there is no smoking inside the bar. Classic of Hilldale's upscale experience, expect to pay a premium price for a slightly above standard beer selection. They also offer a few unique imported beers with some that can be mixed to provide unique combinations.
