link***CLOSED*** I read the 2007 raving review, and I had high hopes. I visited General Lafayette in July 2010, and it was VERY disappointing. The beers each had off-flavors, that were only masked in the stronger ales. The place was just about empty, and I chatted with the head brewer for a while, and he was very apologetic for the beers. He said their yeast had gone bad and they were working to order new strains for brewing. Well, fast forward a year later and by October 2011, the brewery is closed. Its a real shame, because the Inn had such history. But let this be a lesson to brewmasters out there... You must keep the beer good, and get the crowds into your establishment. Given the history of this place, I doubt we've heard the last, and I predict to see some reincarnation of this ghost brewery in coming years.

I simply LOVE The General Lafayette. Set in a 275 year old Haunted Inn this Brewery is not one to miss. The brewery equipment is visible at the front of the Restaurant inside a glass enclosed porch-type setup. When you enter through the left hand side of the building you can make a right and go to the Basement bar area or head straight to the hostess table/bathroom area to be seated in the formal dining area. I usually opt to go to the basement bar. There are exposed wooden beams on the ceiling and a rustic old feel to the bar. The bar is double sided and you can sit on the entrance side where there is a booth and a few tables or you can go to the other side of the bar where the Brew equipment and widows are located with more with top tables etc. Their beer is excellent with rotating taps of craft brewed goodness. I love the Chocolate Thunder Porter and I think its one of the best in the area. Try the Mead Ale as well though it is strong so be careful. (they limit you to three servings for your own safety) They have rotating seasonals as well and a list of aged beers and special "secret" beers which you have to ask to know about. Everything at this place is consistently good.
