Left Santa Fe, New Mexico on a windy Saturday heading for Pueblo and an over-night. Decided instead to go on to Denver but lunch loomed and Pueblo was the perfect stop.

Glad we did.

Shamrock Brewing called and we answered.

An old looking building with lots of character and personality, when we entered the bartender shouted: "Oi, come on in. Take a seat, folks. Glad you're here!" Now how could we not stay and sample.

So we did -- a new Doppelbock, a Strong Scotch Ale, a sampling of the Red, a cooked-to-perfection buffalo burger with bleu cheese and thick chips and we had indulged ourselves for over an hour.

There are TV's above the long, ornate bar (sound turned down, thank you very much! I do not like sports bars!) and a "dining room" attached can accommodate 100 people easily...but this day, it was the two of us and 12 of our closest friends, not counting Eddie our server & the bartender.

I just love these "finds" - someplace not on a set agenda, a spontaneous stop that makes you say walking out the door: "Keep a table ready, lads. We'll be back."

We had planned a return trip to Southern Arizona through Utah but not now.

Eddie promised to keep the Doppelbock at room temp just for me.

En route to the National Homebrewers Conference in Denver, I stopped in Pueblo for an early afternoon beer. The Shamrock Brewing Company is in an old building downtown, and tries to look like an old Irish pub. There's some history in these walls, and photos around the place make it clear there has been a bar here quite a while. There were several beers on tap, I opted for a wit beer. The bartender offered me a sample of their Imperial Red Ale. It had a nice balance between hops and malt, and didn't taste of alcohol. Very smooth.

The food menu looked good, but I wasn't hungry. And Denver was still down the road, so reluctantly, I left. The Shamrock Brewery is great, and I will go back!
