Bottleworks remains a standard stop for people looking for hard-to-find bottled beer. However, it is showing signs of age. During my most recent visit there, there was a lot of empty shelf space, one of the refrigerators was out of order, and some of the bottles were collecting dust. I bought some cans of a local beer and apparently they had been in the broken fridge too long, as the beer was very stale. I know what the beer was supposed to taste like, having visited the brewery.

To return to top-flight status, Bottleworks could use a thorough cleaning and a bit more light. It is a significant step below Malt and Vine in Redmond. But it remains the best bottle shop in Seattle's near north end.

They do still have an interesting, but small, tap selection, although the plan is to expand the number of taps soon.

A great beer store. In the old part of the university area this is a store with it all. The lights are down low for the beers health. Be sure to know what you want they have so much it can take time. The wife might have to wait so be careful she might not be very patient for your beer buying trip. Be sure to take her shopping first. The beers are cold and conditioned very well and the staff was very helpful. I will make this a Seattle stop every time.

Bottleworks is beer heaven.

Beer geeks, beer nazis, beer newbies can all gather here and talk about their favorite subject together and with the extremely knowledgable staff.

Then, with glazed eyes, stare through the glass refrigerator doors at the object of their lust; Belgian, German, Austrian, Polish, Chinese, Japanese -- the selection seems endless. Which to pick?

Then a new brew put out by a local brewery might catch the eye, a seasonal from Hale's Ales or Boundary Bay or Iron Horse, a once-a-year beer from Rogue or Lazy Boy - again, how does one choose.

Well, one does and walks out with 3 or 4 bags full - Christmas in July (or at Christmas - what great presents to find under the tree!)

We Seattle-ites are damn lucky to have Bottleworks and, on the "eastside" (that is, across Lake Washington) its sister store, Malt and Vine. If there is a beer available & you can't get to the brewery for a taste -- we have our store(s).

Did I mention Whole Foods market & their beer selection?

Consider it done.
