I stopped in for dinner and drinks when I was staying in the DC area. They have a Happy Hour with $3.50 beers until 7pm (I got there just before 7, so i'm not sure when it starts). I had a couple beers while there. They were out of the seasonal red ale (I believe it was called "The Other Red"), so I settled for the signature Amber Waves Red Ale. It was decent, but a bit too hoppy for my liking. Then I ordered the seasonal Belgian Wit. I think the taste of Coriander and bitter orange was just too strong, and made the beer tough to drink. Overall, I wasn't impressed with either of the beers I tasted.

The original Capitol City Brewing opened in downtown Washington in 1992, the first brewpub in DC in over 35 years. As of 2012 there are 2 locations, and the brewing operations have consolidated to the Arlington VA location. Capitol City's standard offering of signature brews include light Capitol Kolsch, malty Amber Waves Red Ale, hoppy Pale Rider Pale Ale, and roasted Prohibition Porter. They also offering rotating seasonals that include richly robust Fuel Coffee Imperial Stout (9.5% abv), absolutely delicious Triple/Double hybrid (8% abv), pumpkin-spiced ale, India Pale Ale, and Belgian-style white ale. The Arlington location opened in 1997 in the scenic Village at Shirlington, and patio seating is nice. The brewing equipment is easily visible, and the service good. Nice place to stop for a sampler flight of their signature brews, plus a couple seasonals.

Mike McCarthy is one of the most experienced brewers in the area and also makes one of the best Pale Ales in the DC area. Mike is constantly coming up with new recipes for interesting beers, while always ready with a classic too. His beers are served at the brewery in Shirlington, but also at the Capitol City Brewing Company brewpub near Metro Center in downtown DC. If you're looking for some of the best locally brewed beer in the area, this is a must. Hoppy beers, Stouts, and Belgian styles shine through in particular. Food here is quite nice for pubfood, so don't be afraid to make it a meal stop as well.
