Cannon Beach, Oregon is popular. So popular that in summer, it's nigh impossible to find a place to stay, to eat, to drink, or a place to walk on the beach that isn't crowded.

And the businesses in town know it.

Those of us who live close by call it "Can Not Beach" for good reason.

There are several places to get beer in town; Pelican Brewery, probably the most well-known and populated; Bill's Tavern, smaller -- more intimate -- but the service leaves much to be desired; Public Coast Brewery where IPA's rule; and then there's the Screw and Brew.

Now before you get all excited, that is NOT an advertisement for what goes on...not entirely.

This IS a brewpub but inside a hardware store!

Interesting concept. Last time I encountered such a creative establishment was in Northern Washington at the foothills of the Cascade Mountains where sits the North Fork Beer Shrine, Pizzaria and Wedding Chapel where, when we walked in having never been there before, were greeted with "We've been waiting for you."

At the Screw & Brew, no such greeting. In fact, the one waiter (with his baseball hat sitting at a cross-eyed angle, wiping his hands on his trouser leg) asked us for our drink order. 5 beers on tap didn't give wife Persimmon and I much choice -- we had the Great Divide Yeti -- and then waited for our food order. And waited. And waited. Guess he was in a rush.

We weren't.

After sending him away, we then waited another 10 minutes before he returned possibly pissed that we made him wait.

The least expensive item on the menu was a grilled cheese sandwich for $9.50.

Four of us ate and drank that afternoon. The bill was over $60.

Now I know why it's called the Screw and Brew
