After 1000 miles of coastline California, wife Persimmon and I finally made it to the last vestiges of the Golden State....Crescent City.

Located right on the waters of the Pacific Ocean, this is an old town. Telltale buildings and businesses reveal its age at a glance. A town built around and dependent on the ocean and its bounty for survival.

A town that beer geeks would not expect to find much of said bounty...but they'd be wrong.

Port O' Pints is small...no...tiny. It can be missed. Easily. Although on the main highway (101) through town, most folks are getting "through town" and wouldn't see it...but they'd be missing a real gem.

A "guard" dog sits by the door and will attack at a moment's notice...with wagging tail, soulful eyes and an incessant demand to be petted. Locals populate the few bar stools (or the one lone table outside in the parking lot) giving each visitor a wary eye. Then they start asking questions. Then you order a beer. Then they want to buy you a beer. Then you've made friends.

Isn't that what breweries / brewpubs / taprooms are supposed to be?

Here, a delicious Tripel and perfectly balanced Belgian IPA took 1st and a close 2nd prize for us (an amazing thing since anyone who reads these comments know I am an firm...FIRM...non-believer in IPA's.)

Just how good were the beers?

We intended to move on into Oregon this day, stopping in Brookings at a brewery we had visited many years ago.

Instead, we spent the night...and a few more dollars...and good moments at Port O'Pints.

Take a hint.
