Ocean City Maryland is a very popular and enjoyable beach town. The lengthy Atlantic Avenue beachfront boardwalk is lined with hotels, shops and places to eat. The Coastal Highway that runs the center of the barrier island has many worthy stops including several new breweries. In the summer peak season, the town is quite crowded and parking can be a challenge, but with 5 breweries and some great bars, it is definitely worth visiting anytime. Assawoman Bay Brewing is located on the western shore of the Ocean City barrier islands in a complex of restaurants and bars right on the water. Look for their sign by the highway, and a large vertical Brewery sign in red letters. There is a large dedicated parking lot in front. The front of the brewery has windows which let you see everything inside. Walk up a few stairs to their spacious wooden deck and you can take a walking tour along the large windows. They are also open for guided tours on weekdays. On the left they have a room for grain storage and their mill. In the center are midsize stainless steel brewing vessels. Behind them is a row of midsize stainless steel fermenters. The brewery itself doesn't have a bar, so there is not much else to see here. You can sample their beer next door at the 45th Street Taphouse which is under the same ownership. They usually carry about 8 of the Assawoman beers. My favorites were their Sunsationale Pale Ale and Commodore Decatur Black IPA. Ocean City has really become a great craft beer town and this is a worthy addition.
