I went to Blue Point on a Saturday afternoon on a cold winter day. There's a patio area outside of the tasting room that is probably fairly useful during warmer months - there were only a few people using it on my visit. The tasting room is a fairly small area (relative to the number of people there) with a bar, a couple very small tables, and bathrooms. There's a bar in the far corner that's maybe 15 feet long, has about 12 taps, and is not nearly big enough to handle a Saturday afternoon crowd.

On the bright side, you get 3 free tastings when you show up. They sell pints also, and had about 12 beers on tap. The beers are certainly high quality beers, but everything I tasted was a bit more hoppy than I'd like, so that was a bit of a detraction for me.

Wonderful Toasted Lager! Nice Oatmeal Stout. Good Octoberfest. They have free pint nights, which are too crowded for my tastes. However, many beverage centers in the area carry their growlers. They offer cool coupons through their facebook page (got a case of Octoberfest free when I bought a shirt.) They are also known for organizing music events are participating in other local events. Most local bars of any quality will carry a seasonal selection and the toasted lager.

Blue Point's brewing facility in Patchogue is where they brew the beer that is put into kegs for distribution to restaurants and taprooms all over Long Island and in New York City. Their bottled beers are brewed and bottled at Clipper City Brewing Company in Baltimore, except for the Blueberry Ale which is contract brewed in Saratoga Springs, New York by the Olde Saratoga Brewing Company.

Blue Point's signature beers are: the award winning Toasted Lager, Winter Ale, Summer Ale, Hoptical Illusion, Pale Ale, and now Blueberry Ale. These beers are distributed beyond Long Island and Manhattan to parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland.

The best place to find Blue Point beers is at the brewery's own tasting room in Patchogue (161 River Ave). In addition to their standard lineup of beers (the stuff found in bottles), there are taps devoted to more exotic brews. You'll find a total of twelve taps, all pouring Blue Point beers. Once, I drank a cask conditioned Extra Special Bitter that had matured for some time in a bourbon barrel. That beer was smooth and malty and had a slightly lemony finish (a contribution from the barrel, no doubt). It was an excellent beer -- like no other ESB I had ever tasted in my life.

Every year at the end of January Blue Point plays host to the Long Island Real Ale Festival. Usually there are around fifty firkins of real ale from Long Island and regional breweries. Blue Point offers the largest cask -- a 900 gallon holding tank they hook up to a beer engine. This last January they served a new pale ale with rye malt called Rye Hop Knot.

There are other interesting beers on tap at the Blue Point tasting room that you won't find anywhere else. So you have to just show up and see what you'll find. The tasting room is open Thursdays and Fridays from 3 to 7 pm and on Saturday from noon until 7 pm. You'll find plenty of parking on the side street or in back of the brewery.
