I've been a regular of Keeley's for more than three years. Of course, it didn't hurt that it's right across the street from my ex's apartment...but that's neither here nor there. Keeley's is my local even though I've long since left New York City, and it's always my first stop when I come back through the city. It's a newer Irish pub that focuses on craft brewed beer. There are between 20 and 25 American craft and German and Belgian imports on tap at all times. They also have a fairly impressive list of bottles, though nothing too extreme. For being on the Upper West Side, the crowd is surprisingly diverse with everything from Columbia grad students to teachers to midtown business people making the trip upper west. And one of the fun things about the crowd is it consistently changes-- day by day and throughout the evening. Definitely a younger crowd (mostly under 30) but not at all a college crowd (like the Gin Mill).
Keeley's has a beer club that I was one of the inaugural members in. The premise is drink 100 different beers, get your name on a plaque and a t-shirt, etc. Sure it's genius marketing from the bar's perspective, but it's also a helluva lot of fun trying new beers which they rotate on a nearly daily basis. Some beers are always on- Dogfish 60 and 90, Weihenstephan, Delerium Tremens, Yeunleng- but the rest change frequently. And as for the food, certainly it's classic pubgrub complete with your fried mix basket and wings, but there's at least one stand out. Keeley's makes one of the best burgers on the UWS, if not the best all together. Big words, but they back it up. I'm particularly fond of the bacon cheeseburger with cheddar cheese. It's outstanding.
All in all, still my favorite bar and I miss it just writing about it.
Oh yeah, and try to find a better happy hour than them. $4 pints of nearly all of their beers til 8 p.m. M-F, and then most of the day Saturday and Sunday. Salud!

This small beer bar has one cask tap and about 20 beers on regular tap, as well as two ciders. The selection was not all that ambitious, though. When I visited the cask ale was Genesis Ale from the Shmaltz brewing company (He'brew) which was a nice English style bitter without too much hoppiness.

The food is pedestrian to say the least, but the portions are generous and $5 pints of beer are pretty rare in Manhattan. I would go back for a quick pint but not for food, and the atmosphere was nothing to shout about -- it seemed an uneasy compromise between beer bar and sports bar, with several screens at all corners.
