Hanging around Ocean City MD for the weekend & there are only so many times you can go to the boardwalk before it gets old so we busted loose & hit some sights on the mainland. The previous reviews to this place seemed pretty good & it wasn't far so we stopped for some sampling. Easy to find off of Route 50 & the building is pretty cool on the inside. Nice glass window behind the bar to view the tanks in the back. The bartender was friendly & accommodating. The beers overall were very good. Started with the kolsch and progressed through the brown ale, a nitro porter, a barleywine, a rye stout, and a double IPA called "Cloud 9", which was absolutely great. A leap of faith led me to purchase two bottles of the barleywine aged in bourbon bottles.
There is no food available but you can bring your own. This will definitely be a place to visit again when in the area.

I was wandering around the area on a day trip from DC and I always stop at breweries. This one doesn't disappoint! they were just choosing labels for a new bottling and asked customers what they thought. I also tasted their Hopless Beach, which was really interesting for not hops. kind of a name and concept seller rather than taste. The IPA was amazing though! And the man at the bar was very knowledgeable. if you like small breweries with a homely feel and big beers, this is the place!

A home for big beers! The selection leans heavily towards higher ABV & higher IBU beers – which I think is great. They sell a round of 4 samplers in decent sized glasses.

No food. It’s in an undeveloped area – but close to Ocean City, which makes it a great respite from chain joints and faux Irish pubs near the beach. The building is a dog friendly barn-like structure. They’re investing in the brewing equipment, not the décor, which is fine with me.

Burley Oak is a small 8.5 barrel microbrewery, their motto is "Small Batches - Big Beers", and they live up to this creed. I first visited late 2011, when they were only 40 batches into their brewing endeavor, and I was very impressed at the great variety of well-crafted beers from this young brewery. I visited again a year later and was equally impressed. Their tap list ranges from 5-8 brews, which are available by sampler. They include: Just the Tip Kolsch (their lightest), Brooks Belgian Wheat Ale (average), Smokey the Beer Campfire Porter (a lightly smoked German style rauchbier), Cabin Fever Black Pilsner (nicely balanced), Bunker-C Porter, and Gingerbread Holiday Ale (packed with spices). Their 3 biggest beers were absolutely delicious: Rude Boy Imperial Red Ale (8%abv, robust), Pale Ryeder Rye Imperial Pale Ale (8%, good mix of malts), and Buck Naked India Pale Ale (7.5%, incredible super hoppy 130 IBU!). The staff was super friendly and aimed to please their customers, promptly changing kegs and filling growlers. The tasting room is inviting, and there is a large window behind the 17-chair wooden bar so you see directly into the brewing activities. There is a chalkboard on the wall which shows draft list, but note that there is no food service. The building is a spacious one-story warehouse design, with a concrete floor and wooden rafters and roof. There is adequate free parking in their gravel lot. Unless you're heading to Ocean City, this location is somewhat remote, but I would say it is definitely worth the drive if you like big beers. ps.
