Stopped in here with a friend before a homebrewing session. We were immediately offered an in-house rye beer, after browsing the brewing supplies.

They have a rack of brewing books, including Radical Brewing by Randy Mosher of the Chicago Beer Society. There was a small rack of unusual ingredients such as orange peel, and other herbs and spices. We came for malt, yeast, and hops, and left with what we needed. Yeast and hops were refrigerated behind the counter.

It was specified that they will only sell you hops if your recipe calls for it, so don't expect to stockpile here. They had the basics, and offered advice if asked. We were there on a saturday, and the beer guy was there. Your mileage may vary...

I browsed this place with many hats on... as a gardener, beer enthusiast, and other such needs...

The ingredient selection pertaining to beer was good. I browsed thru their specialty grains, being a little more familiar with malts... They had smaller amounts and the prices weren't too bad on what was available... didn't look at what yeasts or hops they had on hand...

I needed a faucet wrench for the taps and they had no problem with such a specialty item... They had what I needed. Looking around at the other beer toys... it seems like one of those places that are minimalist on stock because they carry a wide array of goods for multiple interests... as per the last review, call to see if they have what you need.

The store itself is at the end of the alleyway, tho the sign may lead you to look for an entrance at the corner, but I am from the suburbs.

Service was excellent, asked and answered with a pleasant but not involving follow up... good enough for me.

As being one of the only local brew stores to Chicago, I stop in regularly to Brew and Grow. This place can be hard to find on the first time visit. It's located directly between Ashland and Elston, just off of Cortland. I almost never buy supplies in bulk here. Instead, I stop in to pick up some last minute needs (yeast, specialty grains, etc.) just before brew day. Their inventory can be spotty, so call before you make the trek. When in stock, they do have a fairly wide variety of extract, grains, hops and yeast. They also have some equipment choices, including submersion chillers and Erlenmeyer flasks.
