Just a stones throw from Smartmouth Brewery, the Birch bar has an impressive craft beer offering. It is one-story cinderblock construction painted greenish yellow. The location is a short distance from the Norfolk harbor where battleships are visible, and parking is free along the street. Out front are a few wooden picnic tables. Inside is their spacious bar area with several tables and a concave two sided 15-chair wooden bar. The decor is all black, creating a subdued relaxed environment. They have 21 global craft brews on tap plus a large variety of about 80 gourmet bottled beers, a most impressive selection. Guaranteed you'll find something new and unique. For food they offer a variety of customizable cheese trays and other simple snacks. The service is professional but frustratingly slow to check on customers. The background music is slow and plodding, adding to the apprehension for service. In conclusion, its a great spot to find new brews, but be patient.
