this place has really good beer. if you like stouts or ipas they have a nice variety. they are pretty creative and make beers with bold favors. the food is standard bar fare. i've always found the service to be pretty good. we would go there more if it wasnt always so crowded that you have to wait to get a seat. the beer's totally worth the wait though. if youre in boulder this place (or mountain sun)should be one of the first stops

A little off the beaten path from downtown Boulder, but much larger than the Mountain Sun, so easier to get a table. They had a lot of beer on Nitro, which always makes us happy. We were with a rather large group of people and we were all able to find beers that we enjoyed.
It was very busy when we were there, we waited a pretty long time to order and get our beer.
They used to have an awesome happy hour on the weekends, not sure if they are still doing it, but if they are it is definitely worth the stop!

Being away from downtown Boulder, I have only had the opportunity to visit Southern Sun once whereas I get to their sister pub, Mountain Sun, more often. My one visit here, however, was quite enjoyable. Food was pub grub. The burger I had was cooked to order and tasty. The beer selection on the other was extensive. All of the beers I tasted were excellent. The place was busy but I managed to find a seat at the bar. Service was a bit slow but responsive when the bartender got around to me. I knew about the no plastic policy from being at Mountain Sun so that wasn't a surprise when it came time to "cash" out.

Their employees do everything - cook one day, wait tables the next, bartend, manage . . . very egalitarian. However, there is something to be said for specialization and developing an expertise in an area. Fortunately, I do not believe they take turns as the brewmaster. Some very nice beers here at reasonable prices (especially for Boulder). I especially liked the Doppelbock. Well worth a stop to try some out.
Unfortunately, I did not stop by on a day when the person cooking knew anything about cooking. It is pretty much typical pubgrub but neither my wife nor I had a good meal.
While the service attempted to appear good, it wasn't. Everyone walking by asked 'Can I get you anything?" and then kept going without waiting for an answer. When you were able to jump right in with a request, the typical response was "I'll be right with you" as they kept walking by.
My recommedation: forget the food, don't sweat the service, enjoy some darn good beer.

There are better places in Boulder.
I sat at the bar. The bartender/waiter wasn't really interested in talking to me, just getting my order in. The patio was full (mid-afternoon on a Saturday). Without a television I had little to do but drink beer while I awaited my food.
The food was nothing special. I had the chicken sandwich. I've never seen a real chicken breast shaped in a circle - not sure how they did it.
They advertise that their employees do everything - cook one day, wait tables the next, etc.
Very good selection of local beers.
Did I mention no credit cards?

CASH ONLY!!!
they have an atm that doesn't hit you too hard with a fee, but it's still a pisser to get told that your plastic isn't good there.
great selection of beers, but they did go a little crazy on the selection of beers that they have on nitro...must be a colorado thing. nice waiters, decent food, and it was way cool to see everyone ride their bikes to go drink.
get there early, because the place packs in fast.

This fine establishment was one of two locations in Boulder, CO (the other is the mountain sun brewpub on the northern end of Boulder). Their menu serves up fairly healthy (Hummus and other vegi' stuff)to standard pub grub with a not-so-greasy twist.
The service was outstanding, possibly the most attentive team of servers, managers and bussers I have ever enjoyed at a Brewpub. The Boulder folks serving us were definitely friendly and knew their beers. Our tables were served just enough when we needed something but not so much that it was not annoying.
We really enjoyed the food and beer. Our nachos and salsa appetizers, dinner, and talking - all were accompanied with a good craft brewed beer or two. I especially liked the Java Porter on Nitrogen. The kids had some excellent homemade root beer and other sodas too.
Remember that all of Colorado is non-smoking in doors. Overall a great experience, a really good place to go with your family (even kids) and be sure to visit the brew house area in back (see photos).
