L Mulligan Grocer is the newest of Dublin's Gastro Pubs. The focus is on Irish and International craft brew. Local beers on tap include Galway Hooker, Ór, Molly's Chocolate Stout, Belfast Blonde and Porterhouse Plain. This selection is complemented by a large selection of internation and local bottled beers.

The pub itself has been nicely refurbished and is now offering a small but high quality food menu. The staff are very friendly and have a good knowledge of the beer they are serving.

It's one of the sad facts of craft beer in Dublin that pubs who serve it depend heavily on tourist footfall. Not that there's anything wrong with tourists, you understand, merely that the local populace, to a considerable extent, have trouble seeing past their heavily-marketed macrobrewed swill. As a result, once you're outside the historical centre of the city you can more-or-less forget about getting a decent pint.

Mulligan's is an attempt to buck that trend and provide the best quality Irish and imported beer to a local crowd. They've chosen Stoneybatter in which to do this, a colourful and slightly bohemian neighbourhood an easy walk from the city centre -- about five minutes' stroll from the Jameson Museum.

At first glance, the pub is a very typically Irish affair -- a long low-ceilinged barroom with lots of dark wood and mirrors. Very careful attention has been paid to the beer selection with maximum representation from the Irish craft breweries and little from the macros. If you want a pint of Guinness you can have it the old-fashioned way in a bottle from the shelf, but wouldn't an O'Hara's go down better?

The bottled selection is vast, showing strong connections between the management and a local importer of Californian beers. There's also plenty from Germany, Belgium and the UK as well.

At time of writing, Mulligan's is very new and has yet to hit its stride. The cask engine is being installed and the kitchen is still organising itself. Plans are for a high-quality full food service.

Well worth a look when in Dublin.
