Six Row Brewing is on the smallish side. I stopped there last summer with some friends on our way through town. We had eaten already, so we just stopped for a couple of beers. The place wasn't crowded, and the service there was fast and friendly.

They had some board games lying around, so we spent an hour or two playing something particularly juvenile (Chutes and Ladders, possibly?). It was a fun way to pass the time, though, while we enjoyed our beers.

On our beer trip to St. Louis we visited Six Row Brewing, a newer and smaller brewery located in the old Falstaff Brewery building. This is a small brewery, reminding me a lot of Barley Johns in Minnesota. The bartender was very friendly and attentive, and knowledgeable about the beers. He even took our picture climbing up the stairs to the mash tun. Overall the beers were not great, but I've had far worse. The Whale (wheat pale ale) was interesting, but not my thing. The special release Killer Whale had some fermentation issues: my wife sniffed hers and gave me a funny look...yes buttered popcorn diacetyl was strong with this one. Knowing we had more drinking to do this evening, we left some beer unfinished and headed to our next destination. The feel of the place is nice, and I would come back if this was my neighborhood. Overall though, there are better places to try first.

December 5th, 2009 marked the opening of St Louis’ newest microbrewery; the Six Row Brewing Company. It’s located in an old Falstaff Brewing Corporation building that was constructed in 1911 and remained in operation until the late 1950s. The Six Row name is a link to the six microbrewery investors rather than the grain.

As soon as you walk into the place you see the beautiful copper bar top that draws your attention from right to left and leads to the copper kettles on the back left of the room. They have a 7-barrel system with the kettles upstairs and five fermenters in the basement. There’s an unfinished upstairs that can be used to expand when the time comes. The whole place is non-smoking. The small location is home to about 10 tables, 15 or so bar seats, three flat screen TVs, and some great beer. For the opening they offered five excellent beers: a Kolsch, Extra Pale Ale, Whale (a ten malt wheat-ale), ESB, and Porter. They also have two guest taps for other beers. One goal is to offer a local home brewers recipe at one of the guest taps. They have growlers available for carry-out; $13.00 for the growler with beer, $9.00 for refills. Pints are $4.50 and a sampler of their five beers is $6.00. They also expect to be producing 1/6 and 1/2 barrel kegs in the future.

Evan Hiatt and Jason Henry are the two brewers we met at the opening. They, as well as the entire staff, were very helpful, friendly, and excited about the grand opening. Right now they don’t have any food service. Pretzels and other bar snacks are available with plans for pizzas in the future. They do allow food to be ordered in and there’s a local Jimmy John’s sandwich shop two doors down. Parking is available on the street.

Update - June 2012
Six Row has grown steadily since opening. They are expanding their brewing and expect to produce 1200 barrels this year. They have various weeknight beer specials, with eight beers on tap the night we were there. They’ve started bottling and their beer is available in about 70 local stores and restaurants in Missouri and Illinois.

They have a pretty good menu now with typical brewpub starters like nachos, pretzels, and quesadillas plus pizza, soups and salad, and hot sandwiches, also some pastas and dessert. The brewpub has expanded to a couple rooms an upstairs area. One has a shuffleboard table with eight tables, two dart boards and a large flat screen TV. The other room has a very comfortable couch and matching chair, a Foosball table with two captains chairs all in a room with a small cozy fireplace. There is a separate restroom upstairs also. It’s available to rent for small parties up to about 40 people.
