Great little brewery for being located in a college town like Morgantown. My neighbor is good friends with the head brewmaster, Brian, so I'm a little biased towards Morgantown Brewing as opposed to Mountain State, the other brewpub in Morgantown.

They have a solid lineup of beers on tap -- the stout, brown, and amber are probably their weakest offerings -- they don't have much body or flavor. The Zach Morgan's pale ale is definitely above-average, with a good balance of bitterness and hoppiness, and I'm also partial to their 80 Schilling. It's not as good as an O'Dells 90 Schilling, but definitely a good offering as a Scotch ale.

What really sets Morgantown brewing apart are their seasonals and small batches: the small batch cask is tapped every Friday night for "Firkin Friday" -- it's a chance for Brian to really experiment and provides a pretty fun atmosphere (they hand out tickets to draw the winner, who gets to tap the cask to kick off the drinking). Their seasonals are usually pretty good too -- currently they have a peanut butter-infused Alpha Blonde Ale (a spin off of the regular blonde) that I thought would be a bad idea, but it turned out extremely well. It's this kind of creativity that keeps me (and other customers) coming back on a regular basis, because there are enough regular offerings to keep you happy, but there's also a good chance you will be pleasantly surprised by their limited offerings.

The food is really good too -- typical pub fare, but they serve 1/2-pound burgers that are top-notch.

Morgantown Brewing is West Virginia's oldest operating brewery, and has an average offering of drinkable beers. None were especially bold (most around 5% abv), most I would consider below average in today's artisanal craft brewing industry, but all were drinkable so I did not give too low a score to any of their beers. My favorite was 6.7% Zach Morgan's Pale Ale (I am partial to IPAs), but close 2nd was their well-crafted Alpha Blonde Ale. The 80 Shilling Scotch Ale was also decent, but I was a little disappointed with the Amber and Brown. This is a college town brewpub, has 2 bars (at least one allows indoor smoking), and the restaurant has a typical pub-fare menu. If you're in Morgantown, I do recommend visiting for a sampler of ~7 beers.

I've been wanting to try this place out for several months now, ever since I started working in the northeast. Finally got my chance when my company sent me to a safety seminar up the road, and I wish I had gone sooner.

VERY good selection of beer, they had everything from an unfiltered wheat beer to a porter, and everything in between. If I remember correctly, they had 9 different ones on tap (and staying 2 blocks away at the hotel, I figured why not try them all!)

So much positive to say about the beer (everything but the light lager...being a college town I guess they felt compelled to brew their own version of Bud Light. I wouldn't recommend it.)

It did seem like the IPA was the popular beer though. Very malty yet crisp, all the hoppiness you would expect in an IPA).

I didn't rate the food, though I did have buffalo wings...they were good enough for pub food.

Atmosphere was a typical college bar, and all the wait staff and bartender were pretty college girls (and all were very nice to this fat drunk guy!)

If your ever in NW West Virginia, I highly recommend checking this place out, I'll be back several more times, as the opportunity arises.
