It's one of those stops you must make, even though you know ahead of time it's a tourist trap. I've been to Munich a few times with a bunch of different people, and I always take them there. It's a good time, beer is good if not very exciting, and plentiful. Food is surprisingly tasty for such a large hall that has huge turnover in people, beer, and food.
Service can be spotty. I've had amazing servers that were super quick getting beer, and other times it's been a challenge to get someone's attention. It's always crowded, too, but that's part of the fun.
Tourist Trap! The Hofbrauhaus is a must stop just to say you were there. It is kind of like Disney for the beer lover. Very large indoor area with LOOOOONG picnic tables and waiters and waitresses delivering liters of average german beers. If your lucky the waitress will look like this years St. Pauli's girl. Yes, we had fun but don't make this your only destination in Munich. Great for people watching.
The Hof Brau Haus is just as advertised. A huge hall, holds a ton of people, however the seating is somewhat odd, there are extremely long picnic tables and you are just seated where there is a available room. So you can just get placed randomly next to people you do not know.
The standard beers were available, only four were available when I was there. The Dunkel was definitely my favorite.
The food options are more vast than the US version of the Hof Brau, I had pork knuckle which was quite good. They also sell huge pretzels at a stand in the middle of the restaurant.
