Much is written about the atmospheric pubs of Ireland, but not so much about her off-licences. Carvill's of Camden Street is deserving of more praise than most any pub you care to mention.

The building dates from 1906, when it was established as a "spirit grocer", selling drink and other essential provisions to the south city. The original interior has been well preserved: dark wood shelving; a long counter where the shopboys would wrap your goods for you, and even the little cashier's booth in the corner, unfortunately now mostly used for stacking cases of Dutch Gold and Moosehead.

Sammy Davis Jr used to buy his champagne here in the '60s, bringing Shirley Bassey with him.

These days the shop is about half-and-half wine and beer, with a generally good range of Belgian, English and German brews. Prices can be a little on the steep side, but keep an eye on the special offer baskets by the door.

A piece of Dublin drinking history where no-one will try and force a pint of nitrogenated stout into you.
