While Dek's has a good selection, they are not up against much competition in Rocky Point, NY, and they act like they know it. The service is awful. You'll stand around for a while hoping for the bartender to notice you, and yes, that always seems to be bartender singular no matter how busy it is.

The main issue I have with Dek's is the blatant short-pouring. This is not isolated to one bartender either. Dean (the owner, or one of them) has clearly instructed his staff to wiggle the tap to yield between 1/4 to 1/3 of the pint length as pure foam, and he happily pockets the difference. The beer is not cheap and the happy hour (from 5-7 pm) is only $1 off.

The atmosphere is pretty typical Long Island beer bar, wood paneling, bingo screens, and a jukebox with pre-CD hits.

If you are to take one message away from this review, it is about the stinginess of the pour. I don't like asking for top ups each and every time, it makes for an unpleasant experience, and I am less and less happy about going to Deks as a result.

One of the best restaurants on the North Shore of Long Island, Deks upgraded their taproom in May 2007 and began serving craft beer on a twelve tap system. They feature an ever changing selection of local and American craft beers, including Southampton, Sixpoint, Blue Point, Troegs, Crop Circle, as well as international favorites.

Once a month they do a cask night with a gravity fed firkin of real ale up on the bar (so far this event has been the first Friday of each month). The last firkin (Jan 2007) feature Oakham Bishop's Farewell from the Oakham Ales in Peterborough, England.

If you are into beer and food pairing, every third Wednesday evening Deks stages of beer dinner where five craft and imported beers are paired with specially selected dishes. Local beer enthusiasts (one a BJCP judge) introduce and describe the beers.

The cellaring and refrigeration capacity is being expanded to accommodate an growing list of craft beer in the bottle. As of Feb 2007 Deks offers 75 different bottled beers, such as Rochefort 6, Brooklyn Local 1, Rodenbach, Boon Gueuze, Kwak, Westmalle Tripel, etc.
