Located overlooking the canal this beer destination is one of my favorite beer locations anywhere in the world. A small cramped indoor location and a more spacious outside beer garden. The building and outdoor tables are located off the roadway so there are no tourists walking by your table. The staff is knowledgeable on their beers and able to recommend some of the more special choices. However if you expect to find Westvleteren you will be left thirsty, at least the times I visited. Amazing selection in a beautifully tacky, downtown location. One downside is smoking is allowed in the bar.

One of my favourite Belgian bars, this one. Eschewing the standard down-a-dark-alley or in-a-basement school of Belgian pub location, Het Waterhuis commands superb canalside views through its large windows. There's an abundance of outside seating as well for those glorious sunny afternoons.

Service is attentive and the menu, while not the biggest you'll see in Belgium, is certainly extensive. Good Belgian food is served in the adjoining restaurant.

I lost my Westvleteren virginity here, though they haven't put up the commemorative plaque yet.
