Dock Street Brewing Company, founded in 1985, was a pioneer microbrewery in Philadelphia. The business was sold in 1998, was reacquired by the original owner in 2002, and its original brewpub was closed. A renovated firehouse was chosen for the brewpub's rebirth in gentrified west Philly's Cedar Park neighborhood. With artisan flatbread pizza, hip artsy decor, and movie nights, this reborn brewpub now targets the college crowd. My favorites of their recent beers have been: hoppy and spicy "Rye IPA", aggressively hopped "OMG Pale Ale", complex champagne-yeast "Bubbly Wit Belgian Style Wit", and soft "Royal Bohemian Pilsner". "Man Full of Trouble Porter" is a rich and dark standard offering, named after a pre-revolutionary Philly tavern. "Sudan Grass" with African spices is an excellent gluten-free sorghum-based beer. Producing small batch beers with complex recipes, Dock Street Brewing is again earning a respectable reputation, and my only concern is the hit-or-miss service at the brewpub.
