I stopped here with some friends while visiting Vancouver. The location right along the water and in downtown Vancouver is quite nice.

I had an appetizer (chicken on a stick), which was pretty decent, but nothing spectacular. I also had a beer sampler that came with a large selection of beers (8, I believe). For the most part, the beers were good, although there were a couple that were a bit of a struggle to get through.

We sat outside on the patio. While there, one bum came over to our table and asked us for money. When it came time to pay, the waiter requested that if we were paying in cash, we shouldn't leave it on the table because the bums would steal it. If they know these people are just wandering up and accosting patrons, and stealing money, shouldn't they do something about it? How about just paying someone to stand out front and make sure it doesn't happen? Steamworks is a decent enough brewery, but this seems like neglect to me.

Sadly, one of the best brewpubs in Vancouver city proper: The beer is probably the worst part of Steamworks.

They offer a large number of house beers, and a rotating seasonal or two. The house beers are base styles that are average at best and occasionally have problems (Such as an Oatmeal stout that was practically see-through with no body or roast flavour).

The seasonals are generally more interesting, from a dry-hopped lager (interesting, but not tasty) to an imperial espresso stout (Amazingly well done).

The location has a great view of the water, with outdoor seating available. The interior has a great atmosphere, with a winding staircase down to a second level. The food is very well done with an extensive menu at reasonable prices for the area.

The first thing that one may notice about Steamworks Brewing is the location. Not only is it about a 30-second walk from the Waterfront Station, making it one of the easiest public transportation trips one could plan, it overlooks the Burrard Inlet and North Vancouver. During the day, the surrounding area is bustling with people, making it an inviting location. At night, the skyline is calming and captivating -- a view which varies depending on whether one chooses to sit in the more upscale street-level area or the casual water-level area downstairs.

The beer selection is nothing short of outstanding. If you have trouble deciding between their many beers, I recommend you pick up the sampler -- which for a mere $10 had enough beer to leave me more than satisfied, more than any other sampler I've seen.

While their seasonals are likely to have rotated by the time this review has been written, their IPA, Great Pumpkin, Porter, and Dunkelweiss were all amazing. The Porter, which rotates with a Stout, was smoky and satisfying. The IPA had a powerful, floral nose that finished sweet.

Although I did not personally have their food, an acquaintance insisted that their Butter Chicken was incredible.
